Common Issues That Can Cause Kidney Disease

A pair of organs that are the size of a human fist, a person’s kidneys are vital to body health. Bean-shaped, the kidneys sit on either side of a person’s spine and filter excess water, waste products, and additional impurities out of the blood (among other activities).

Kidney disease unravels when an individual’s kidneys are damaged and can’t perform properly. Some symptoms of kidney disease include:

  • Issues around sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of appetite
  • Issues around concentrating
  • Swollen ankles/feet
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry and scaly skin
  • Frequent peeing, mostly during the night hours
  • Puffiness of eyes in the morning

Causes Of Kidney Disease

Sadly, kidney disease can cause other issues with health, including malnutrition, nerve damage, and weak bones. With that said, there are a slew of other kidney issues that can help bring on kidney disease, which include:

Diabetes – A huge issue behind kidney disease can be diabetes. As a group of conditions that can create high blood sugar, this enhancement in the level of sugar in a person’s blood can result in damage to the blood vessels in a person’s kidneys as time goes on. This essentially means that a person’s kidneys can’t function properly when trying to cleanse out the blood. As such, the body is then overloaded with toxins, and the end result is kidney failure.

High Blood Pressure – This condition can be quite dire for a person’s kidneys as it enhances the weight placed on the glomeruli (small blood vessels located in an individual’s kidneys where the blood is cleansed). As time goes by, this heaviness creates pressure that can damage the glomeruli, and this is where a decline in kidney function can start.

Glomerulonephritis – Speaking off, when the glomeruli get inflamed, glomerulonephritis can occur. This can be caused by medications, infections, or even congenital abnormalities. Having said that, more often than not, this condition can get better on its own accord.

Kidney Stones – Another common kidney issue is kidney stones, which occur when minerals, as well as other substances within a person’s blood, crystalize within the kidneys, where hard masses (i.e. stones) are formed on these organs. While this condition can be quite painful, the stones do come out during urination (eventually, and don’t generally cause major health issues.

Polycystic Kidney Disease – A genetic condition that causes a variety of small sacs of fluid (cysts) to form on the kidneys, polycystic kidney disease can debilitate kidney function, thus causing kidney failure.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) – While fairly common, UTIs are bacterial infections within any area of a person’s urinary system. While bladder and urethra infections are the most common UTIs, this condition can be treated fairly easy – by simply going to the doctors, getting checked out, and receiving antibiotic prescriptions; however, if a UTI is not detected, and left untreated, it can spread to a person’s kidneys, thus bringing kidney failure on. Therefore, it is very important to be tuned into the symptoms and seek medical attention as soon as you think you may have an UTI.
